NZ's Sunshine Capital

We lead the sunshine race midway through 2014

On Friday the 4th July 2014, the Beacon reports that as at the end of June Whakatane has accumulated 1393 Sunshine hours.  This is 53 hours more than New Plymouth which is in 2nd place.  Nelson is in 3rd place, 191 hours behind Whakatane, followed by Blenheim.

We live in the Sunshine Capital of New Zealand

Whakatane District has been awarded the title of New Zealand’s Sunshine Capital after recording the most sunshine hours for 2013. The Whakatane area enjoys a temperate climate and records some of New Zealand's highest sunshine hours year after year. With a new sunshine recorder installed in 2009, Whakatane was New Zealand's Sunshine Capital in 2010, 2012 and 2013 and the North Island's Sunniest Place in 2011. The district has moderate temperatures year round, with summer temperatures between 25°C and 28°C, and winter seldom falling below 11°C. Whakatane records the highest temperature in New Zealand about 55 days of each year. Ohope Beach was recently voted ‘New Zealand’s Best Beach’ in an online poll initiated by the Green Party which attracted more than 18,000 votes. Sunshine and beaches make a great holiday destination and Ohope is treasured by generations of New Zealanders as a favourite holiday spot. - See more at: www.whakataneinfo
